I raffinatissimi bronzi provenienti dalla città sacra di Ife, le grandi figure in bronzo di Tada, le meravigliose terracotte di Nok precedenti all'età classica greca, furono scoperti tra il 1911 e il 1944. Essi suscitarono tale stupore e ammirazione negli studiosi che per primi le videro, da indurli a ritenere di avere fortuitamente ritrovato la mitica città di Atlantide di cui favoleggiava Platone. Scomparse durante l'epoca della colonizzazione, scomparse durante i successivi anni delle guerre civili, queste opere sono recentemente ricomparse nei musei della Nigeria e, in seguito a un lungo e complesso lavoro diplomatico, hanno potuto essere esposte a Firenze nella sua sede più suggestiva: Palazzo Strozzi.
